Le Pommier Wine Estate is a small family-owned winery in the Banhoek Valley. At Le Pommier, we just love our heritage and the stories about it. Especially this story about why we named our Malbec – Jonathan’s Malbec. Perhaps you’ve heard the story before because we love telling it as much as we loved Jonathan. For those of you who haven’t, join us in reminiscing about the tale about Jonathan’s Malbec. You’ll most probably find it amusing as we do today…not that it was amusing back then!

Jonathan was Le Pommier’s resident Bull with a unique attitude; he was also quite mischievous. One year Jonathan broke into this vineyard and consumed most of the Malbec harvest, illustrating his excellent taste. With a small amount of Malbec left, the first limited quantity was produced.

So when next you see a bottle of Le Pommier Jonathan’s Malbec, you can also fondly think of this naughty, droopy-eyed sweetheart and his excellent taste in this particular cultivar. Sadly, Jonathan passed away a year later, but his legacy lives on in this wine named after him.
