Every wine estate has a wine that lies very close to their heart and for Le Pommier it is theirs newest red blend, Le Pommier Mac.

Le Pommier’s Mac Cabernet Franc – Malbec blend, pays homage to Mac van der Merwe, previous proprietor of Le Pommier wine farm. Mac was responsible for establishing the magnificent Cabernet Franc and Malbec vineyards on the farm in 2003. Starting from humble childhood beginnings, Mac was an aspiring businessman, keen rugby player and a daring street racer as a young man, who progressed in life to become an astute entrepreneur. Mac got the name from his only favourite teacher, who called him MacMerwe, the name Mac prevailed. Mac has always been extremely competitive, daring, visionary and passionate about every challenge he took on in life. Mac, the wine, has many similar characteristics of Mac, the person. The wine is intense, robust, bold, pleasant, balanced, and worthy compassion for any occasion.

Mac van der Merwe’s eldest daughter, Melanie van Schalkwyk, and son-in-law, Johan van Schalkwyk, purchased the farm at the end of 2014. Since then they have continued to build on the successes and good reputation earned by previous owners, including Mac.

This rich blend of Cabernet Franc and Malbec shows dark fruit characters of blackberry and mulberry on the nose. The wine has a firm but mouth-filling structure and velvety tannins on the palate with a long lingering aftertaste.

This wine is an unusual choice of grape varieties to blend, but it has shown excellent results. We have won some beautiful Awards for our MAC 2019, including Gold at the Gold Wine Awards, 4 Star Platter Award and Gold for SA Women’s Wine and Spirit Awards.
