Nestled along the scenic Helshoogte Pass, Le Pommier is ideally positioned on the main route between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, making it a perfect destination to experience the captivating beauty of the Cape Winelands. This historic wine estate, whose name means “The Apple Tree” in French, was once an apple orchard and part of the 300-year-old Zorgvliet farm. Today, a few apple trees still stand, a nod to the estate’s rich heritage.
A Journey Through Time and Ownership
Le Pommier’s legacy dates back to the 1600s, with a series of owners shaping its history. The current owners, Johan and Melanie van Schalkwyk, bought over in late 2014 from Melanie’s parents, Mac and Marietjie van der Merwe. Since then, the estate has flourished under their vision and care, with new Malbec and Cabernet Franc vineyards planted, enhancing its unique wine offerings.
Interestingly, Le Pommier’s restaurant building once served as an animal shed in 1916, storing feed for livestock. Today, this building has transformed into a warm, country-style restaurant, offering an inviting atmosphere where guests can enjoy memorable dining experiences.
Le Pommier’s Signature Wines
As a fully operational wine farm, all the grapes used in the Le Pommier wine range are grown on-site, ensuring an authentic “estate-to-glass” experience. Le Pommier’s lineup includes six beautifully crafted wines:
• Sauvignon Blanc
• Maraai Rosé
• MAC Blend (a Cabernet Franc and Malbec blend)
For those seeking limited-release wines, Le Pommier offers Angle Peur Cabernet Franc, Jonathan’s Malbec, and Summercourt Chardonnay. Guests can indulge in wine tastings and specially curated wine pairings at the estate, experiencing the unique character of each wine.
The wines can also be ordered from Le Pommier’s Website.
